It's been almost seven years since Mariah Carey released capital N new music. Her last album Caution, a pop R&B gem with bops like "A No No" and "GTFO," came out in 2018. Since then, the pop legend has been coasting, dropping off anniversary reissues and capitalizing on her colossal Christmas catalog, not so much resting on her laurels but soaking in the victory lap she's rightfully earned. But something new is stirring: a new dawn for Mimi has arrived.
On June 2, the superstar announced the beginnings of her next studio album on Instagram, teasing a snippet of a new song called "What's your type?" and a mysterious project titled "MC16." We're taking that as a nod to a new album, which would be her 16th studio record. The few seconds clip shows Carey stepping into a sleek black convertible and changing the radio station from her song "It's Like That" to something called "T:D_MC16.mp3" which features a NOLA-style bounce beat and Carey saying, "To show my appreciation for your support, thank you DJs." Could it be a club turn? Perhaps — that would certainly align with current pop music trends.

So far, the pop star has been pretty mum about the project but in an interview with The Associated Press in April, she did hint that she was indeed working on something new. "I’m not supposed to talk about it. ... But I’m working on something. We won’t say what it is, but something new."
